A band who hold firmly to the psychedelic folk banner, Sundance Jump is the latest recording project of the W. Dire Wolff Band. A band who make their mark playing both original material and covers, they’ve become a true to life emulation of their favourite artists, along with a powerful musical force in their own right. Mostly settled in Northern California where the play and record, the band have been steadily building momentum in recent years, bringing their sound to the greater United States with a string of impressive albums.
Their latest release, ‘Deep Purple Sage’ is a holiday record released in the final days of 2019. An intricate blend of timeless folk and enduring psychedelia, the new album was recorded in Joshua Tree, bringing a distinct desert sound to their vintage acid rock edge.
An old school epic, the album was recorded with a blend of retro sounds, mixed through analogue boards and fed to a digital interface, capturing a rough and ready sound that perfectly captures the four-piece’s energy and spirit. Revelling in a distinct 60s sound, everything about ‘Deep Purple Sage’ points to an anthemic slice of yesteryear. Opening track ‘Ally, Are You Okay?’ swaggers into view with a knowing confidence and American vibe, breaking the silence and acting as a solid introduction to the project.
From there, the album shifts between styles and shades, building an evolved sound that goes deep beyond the rockabilly aesthetic. Through the short-lived instrumental ‘Sew My Shadows’ and closing number ‘Library of Dreams’, the band show a more delicate and wistfully romantic side, while dark atmospherics take and almost sultry tones take centre stage on tracks like ‘Don Juanita’ and ‘Three Little Stars’. It’s a dynamic and wonderfully placed contract to the rock ‘n’ roll anthemics of ‘Zodiac Killer’, ‘Boss Man Says’, and ‘Johnny’s Too Young’, three impressive tracks that push the album forward and show exactly what the band are capable off.
A comprehensive album carried by a wistful and nostalgic sheen, ‘Deep Purple Sage’ is a warm combination of musical talent, technical execution and analogue vision. Available now on CD, vinyl, and as a digital download, it’s a refreshing, rough and ready slice of old form Americana that fans will surely come to love.
