Review: Pop Trash Inc – ‘1.0’

Best described as the dirty love child of Garbage, Daft Punk and Darth Vader, Pop Trash Inc. are a dynamic four-piece that have been forging a unique path through the Dutch music scene. A genuine DIY troupe, the band write, produce, and record all their own music, backing it with original artwork and visuals to create a complete and uncompromising assault on the sense.

Starting in 2014, Pop Trash Inc. built their sound on the enduring vibes of the ‘80s and ‘90s, creating an epic style that lingers somewhere between wonderfully contemporary and perfectly modern. Blending their music with a medley of pop culture references, Pop Trash Inc’s first trilogy of singles paved the way paid tribute to the likes of ‘Bladerunner’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, and ‘80s cult film, ‘Weird Science’. With their sound established, the band have recently released their debut EP, ‘1.0’, a five-track affair that brings together new edits of their previous singles along with two dynamic new cuts.

Emerging from a familiar series of Space Race era audio clips, the EP hits with controlled intensity, building into a sci-fi cacophony of digital beats, sonic vocals, and driven guitar chords. Opening track ‘Space Traveller’ is built to impress, and in reality, captures the essence of the album in one explosive hit. Like Public Service Broadcasting locked a time warp and driven to the edge of their refinement, Pop Trash Inc. have created an unforgettable sound, one that is reinforced with every track. Second cut ‘S.I.T.A.’ is pure ‘80s madness, while newcomer ‘Miracle’ brings in a more atmospheric feel, offering a Bond-esque sound that resonates perfectly against the musical melees that surround it. Closing with previous singles, ‘Can’t Go Back To Yesterday’ and ‘Vertigo City’, the EP rolls to a definitive close on a high, ushering in a new, and yet somewhat nostalgic era in music.

A unique release that follows in the footsteps of ‘space rock’ pioneers, ‘1.0’ is an unconventional delight that knows its strengths and stays close to them. A wonderful illustration of what Pop Trash Inc can create, it’s a release that will undoubtedly turn heads for a few years to come.

Score: 7.5/10
