Review: Dead Letter Circus – ‘Dead Letter Circus’



For years now, Brisbane’s Dead Letter Circus have been one of our favourite groups. After dominating the progressive rock scene with 2015’s ‘Aesthesis’ and 2017’s more playful reimagined album ‘The Endless Mile’, the band began to draw international attention, joining with a major label and entering into the era of the self-titled full-length release.


Not to be confused with the debut, self-titled EP that set the fire burning, the new album is a genuine masterclass in stadium-sized, unrelenting anthems. Their fifth album so far, ‘Dead Letter Circus’ is a perfect amalgamation of all their previous experiments, bringing together the most impressive elements of their previous releases and packing it all into one perfect album. Set upon a backdrop of reverb-infused, guitar driven instrumentals and echoing the soaring, inimitable vocals of frontman Kim Benzie, ‘Dead Letter Circus’ is relentless in its magnitude.


New guitarist Luke Palmer works effortlessly with the well-established Clint Vincent, while the basslines of Stewart Hill and heavy percussion of Luke Williams pushes each track forward with an immutable energy that clashes perfectly with the band’s penchant for ethereal rock sounds.



We weren’t joking earlier on our social media pages when we said that for us ‘Dead Letter circus’ is a perfect 10/10 album, and with the band being one of the most loyal, hardworking, and passionate Australian acts around, every merit and award that comes from the release couldn’t be more well-deserved. The only flaw in the new album is that it makes us regret missing them at The Bald Faced Stag back in June all the more.
